Hi my iMac turned off all of a sudden and now just keeps restarting in a loop
JA: How much experience do you have with this particular machine?
Customer: I've had it for around three years
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: Nothing i can remember
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I tried holding shift to start it in safe mode but it won't register
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?

If you cannot start by holding shift then the hard drive likely has a fault.

Can you try starting from a boot DVD?

You can borrow a recovery disc or USB device from anyone else with the same version of OS X, or create a recovery disc or USB device using their machine.
