JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: I have a ipad 2
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: I do that whenever they come up
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?

Open Mail app. Tap Mailboxes at the top left. This will open all the mailboxes. Tap Trash under Mailboxes. You will see the deleted emails there. Tap Edit button and tap Mark All. Tap Delete.
