My brother in laws 2008 iMac only shows question mark folder after my attempts to get past a forgotten password
JA: How much experience do you have with this particular machine?
Customer: I'm pretty good at directions I'm a recording engineer running protocols
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Going to the code page and going thru steps to change the password. Then it went to pinwheel of doom and I force quitted.. Not the best move I guess!
JA: The Mac expert can solve this for you. Anything else you want him to know before I connect you two?

The ? Mark means it cannot access the hard drive.

I want you to first do the following please

Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
Turn on your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
Release the keys.
