Is that FCP X?

If so convert your footage to Proxy media during editing and your Mac will perform much better. The odd dropped frame during playback does not matter as when the project is finally exported it will no longer be there. Or just go to Preferences / Playback and uncheck the box warning about dropped frames it makes no difference in the final product.
