I have just bought a second hand imac 5.1 20" 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo memory 3GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
When I bought it the machine was loaded with os10.6.8. It was very slow to boot first time, but I didn't actually check how long. The boot up time varies. It takes longer if it is shut down longer. If the mains power is turned off it takes even longer. Also the airport connection kept dropping and asking for the router password.
I tried pretty much everything I could see on the various discussions.
I have now replaced the pram battery, wiped the hard drive, reloaded os 10.6.8, reset the smc, verified the hard drive.
Boot time still varies. About 4 minutes after being off at the mains overnight. When it booted it asked for my router password ***** would not connect. I restarded it. Boot time went down to 2 minutes and it did connect to the internet, but dropped the connection on screen sleep and took a minute to get it back when waking. I restarted again

Hi Alan, Your Mac will be slow if there is any issue with the hard drive. The slowness is related to the time take to read and write from/to the hard drive. You said you have reinstalled the OS X. How much time did it take to reinstall ?

about 30 minutes for os 10.6.3 from the cd. about 2 hours for the os 10.6.8 update over wifi

It is showing RAM as insufficient. Can you take out all RAM modules and test one by one and see if you experience the slow downs at one module at a time ?

The minimum requirement is 10.6.6 Downlaod XBench --> http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10081/xbench Open Xbench and only select disk for benchmark. Run it and let me know the results

Blackmagic speed test is the best one to check the disk performance. Not sure why it is not working. Can you uninstall and try it again ? Delete/uninstall Disk Speed Test and all its files using this application --> https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/ Reinstall it and try running it. If that didn't work, then try XBench or AJA test --> https://www.aja.com/en/products/aja-system-test This is to rule out the hard drive

The read and write speed are not very good. 4K blocks are small files and 256K blocks are large files. Your average read and write speed for sequential (speed at reading/writing big file) is 30-35 MB/s which is very poor for modern HDDs (spinning at 7200RPM). The modern HDDs have usually speed ranging from 80-160MB/s I believe the issue is with the hard drive. But test the RAM and let me know the results.

Hi Ashik, sorry for the long delay.at 2100 yesterday computr unplugged for 7 hours only 1 Gb ram boot took 6 mins 8 secs - the keyboard?mouse was frozen and aiport connection dropped
restarted immediately boot took 1 minute keyboard/mouse still frozen no airport connection
retarted again 44 secs to boot keyboard/mouse frozen no keyboard/mse no airportThen I took out the 1Gb ram and put in 2Gb ram boot was 51 secs no kb/mouse/airport
immediately put in 3bg ram boot 41 secs no kb/mouse/airport
again tried 3Gb ram exactly same rsultThen I put in only 2Gb ram and left unplugged for 8 hours
at 0600 2Gb ram boot tim 6 mins 3 secs no kb/mse/airport
immediately restarted 2Gb ram boot time 56 secs no kb/mse/airportat 0636 put in 3Gb ram boot was 46 secs no kb/mse/airportunplugged until 1940 tonight with 3Gb boot 46 secs kb/mouse ok no airport
restarted with 3Gb ram boot 24 secs kb/mouse ok no airport
nb all the imes my keyboard/mouse froze I switched keyboards and replacement worked ok. both keyboards are mac extended
Still can't get airport working

Hi Alan, Thanks for the detailed information. Honestly, I can't tell what the problem is. If it is the hard drive, then it shouldn't have affected the keyboard, mouse or airport. I'm not sure if there is any issue with the logic board. Did you ttry running hardware test ?

Sorry I meant disc 2, the application DVD. Lets try verbose mode. Restart and immediately hold down Command and V for a few seconds. This will boot your Mac by going thorough some check ups. Let me know if it stuck at any line

Is there any way to get the Snow Leopard disc 2 so you can run hardware test ? or can you upgrade to latest El Capitan and see if it works on it ? El Capitan is a 6GB file though Hardware test will tell us if there is any issue with any components. Other than that there is no real way to tell the exact problem. You have already tried all troubleshooting steps so far and this issue is more of hardware related than software. Slowness, increase in shut down or load time are indication of hard drive failure but that shouldn't affect the airport or keyboard/mouse, that is what confusing me..

This mac 5,1 will not upgrade past os10.6.8 as far as I know. I can not find anything about there being a disc 2 for os 10.6.Any ideas where we go from here?

Oh, that's a Late 2006 model. I'm afraid this is an hardware issue, something we can't fix online. You need to take it to the Apple Store to have a detailed check up. That Mac might have came with 10.4 Tiger OS X and there should be a second Application DVD. They probably didn't give you when you bought it. If you can get the the OS X disc 2, then we can run Hardware test with it. This Mac may need some internal replacement or repair of components. The only way to find out what is causing it is by running the hardware test or by taking it apart and testing each component. I'm really sorry I couldn't solve your problem, you've already tried everything so far.
