Hi there and welcome

Can you Go to Finder and click Go to Folder

Enter in ~/Library

Press enter

Go to /Preferences

And trash the file com.microsoft.Excel.plist

Once done, restart the Mac and tell me if Excel now opens

Let me know the results please.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'm sorry, I don't see Got to Folder as a choice in Finder
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

It is Go To Folder, you see it at the top in the menu when you clock go

I can also do these steps for you, and have made a request via Additional Services. This is optional, and if you choose to do this, I can, with your permission, remote into your computer while you watch and do all these steps (and deal with any problems that arise during them) for you. Or if you do not choose to take this service, we can continue here. This is no problem at all. Just let me know please.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I would like to try and resolve with you helping me walk through it, if that's ok.
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

Thats no problem, the instructions I gave do work, but you said Got to Folders it is Go to folders.

Let me know how you go please

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Are you still assisting me?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I went to Finder than hit preferences then under GO I hit Go to Folder.
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

yes... I need you to do the instructions I gave you Steve.. as per the message I just sent

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

yes, then

Enter in ~/Library

Press enter

Go to /Preferences

And trash the file com.microsoft.Excel.plist

Once done, restart the Mac and tell me if Excel now opens

Let me know the results please.

Im struggling I don't see a way to enter the com.microsoft.excel.plist
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
How do I let you do this?
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

you do not enter it, you need to send it to the trash.

Maybe it is best to take a minute and read my instructions slowly to make sure you understand the steps, then carry them out?

As your misreading them unfortunately.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

you accept the offer and I can then connect and do the instructions and fix this

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok I trashed the com.microsoft.Excel.plist
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

ok, open Excel

does it now open?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No it is still telling me there is a problem with Microsoft. I have Microsoft Office 2008. I can still open Word and Power Point but not Excel
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There is another file that is com.microsoft.Excel lock file or something like that
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

ok, I hope you did the instructions exactly as I indicated as this should have fixed it up for you...

Can you repeat the instructions but this time restart the Mac as this was a step that was missed

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

delete all excel files you see there under preference

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Only the ones that say Excel, right? There are other files that say Microsoft Office or other Office packages (word, etc.)
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

correct, only excel

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok I deleted 2 excel files. Now you want me to restart the computer? But won't we lose our connection when I do that?
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

yes restart, but you just return to this webpage (you can press Cmd + D to add it to your favorites or check your emails for a link back here)

Then try to open Excel

Let me know the results please.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I also see a file that says com.microsoft.error reporting list
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

ok, you do not need to touch the file

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I rebooted - Excel will still not load.
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

We are in the process of moving and I do not have the Microsoft Office disks. They are in storage.
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

ok, your going to have to locate them sorry, as its the only way to perform the reinstall.

Once you do this it will work, but the reinstall is needed, as we exhausted all the other options available.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
if I buy the Office 2016 for Mac package I can just install it and it will overwrite the existing Office files and be ok?
Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

it would be best to first uninstall 2011 then install 2016 and yes, that would also work.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

If you would like any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Else if you can take a second to rate my service by clicking one of the stars at the top of the screen then submit, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
