my macbook pro wont let me log in. I have rebooted in safe mode to access Utilities to repair and have tried Terminal to rest the password. puzzled on what to try next

Reboot to Recovery HD again if you have already Verified Disk and Repaired Permissions then select Reinstall Mac OS X.
