I have a 2010 imac that doesn't want to turn on. It started

Customer Question

I have a 2010 imac that doesn't want to turn on. It started running really slow for a couple of days then wouldn't boot properly.
It booted in safe mode once but now it just stays on the white screen with the apple logo and the bar at the bottom.
To make things worse the keyboard batteries went flat so now im not sure if the keyboard is connected. Any Ideas?

Do you have a usb keyboard?

Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

If not you may need to borrow one:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
  3. Wait fifteen seconds.
  4. Attach the computer's power cord.
  5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
  6. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  7. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts.
  8. Release the keys.

no i don't, would a standard pc keyboard work or does it have to be an apple one?
Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

Oh I thought you meant you had a PC keyboard. No you need a a keyboard to do this. If when you get to number 6 and you do not hear the startup chime again then the keys aren't working.

I think the wireless keyboard is connected, it comes up with the spinning wheel and a progress bar under it but it only gets to about 1/4 then goes back to the start again.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
How long do i hold the keys for?
Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

Until you hear the startup chime again but if it is not working you won't hear it

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

i have a mackbook pro, is there a way to connect it up and see that way?
Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

You can use Target Disk mode if they both have Firewire and you have a cable.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the machine began running very slow 2 days before it died, is this a sign that the hdd was on its way out do you think?
Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

If you can start up using Target Disk mode then you can check the drive on the other computer

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Dont think i can connect the two together.Im prepared to replace the hard drive but could it be something else hardware related if this doesnt solve it?
Expert:  Mike replied 1 year ago.

I can't say without the keyboard to test it
