I am trying to restart my macbook pro, and have the rainbow

This answer was rated:

I am trying to restart my macbook pro, and have the rainbow wheel of death. I plugged in my external hard drive when my computer was off; when I turned it on, multiple icons for the hard drive kept appearing on the desktop. Now when I try to shut it down or restart the rainbow wheel keeps spinning. Help!

Please push the on/off button for 6 seconds, until the computer turns off.

Push it on again briefly.

What happens?

Its starting worked. Why did it do this?

It got stuck before starting, and then when you tried to turn it off, it simply went to sleep and didn't really reset.

The 6 second hold fixes that by forcibly shutting the machine down.

I'm glad I could help!
