Hi, I have a problem with Motion 4 and DVD Studio Pro. Both

programs cannot be opened and...
Hi, I have a problem with Motion 4 and DVD Studio Pro. Both programs cannot be opened and I receive immediately a message that they suddenly stopped. I reinstalled both programs, but without improvement. I also verified my disk and reset permissions, all without any result. Can you please help me? Below you can find the report with details of the problem (this was for Motion)

Yes, I did. There were no problems with my disk and problem still occurs.

Did you run Software Update under the Apple Logo after you installed?

Yes I did, and all updates are installed. Makes no difference, Motion and DVD Studio pro both still crash the moment I start them. I work under OS 10.7.5, as is also mentioned in the crash report.

Do you have any third party plugins installed for Motion?

No, I even have uninstalled all Motion files, reinstalled Motion, so without any 3rd party plug-ins and the problem still remains.

If you are at Motion version 4.03 try installing this:

If still having problems open Terminal in Utilities folder, copy and paste this line and hit Return then restart the computer and try opening Motion:

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.motion.plist

hit return, then copy and paste this

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.motionapp.plist

hit return, restart

No, that didn't work. I got the following reaction in the Terminal:

Ok but you got no error on:

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.motion.plist

so that was the correct one. The name of that file changed with Motion 5.

So you rebooted and you still can't start Motion?

Yep, the problem still occurs

Go to Applications folder and right click on Motion.app and go to Get Info. What is the version number?

Motion 4.0.3

Select the first icon in the Dock, the Finder then hold Option and select the word Go at the top of the screen. When you hold Option the user Library is visible in that drop down. Go to Library. open Application Support drag the folder Motion to the Desktop then try opening Motion

The Motion folder is in the Final Cut Studio folder under Application Support. I dragged the Motion folder to the Desktop, but unfortunately, Motion still doesn't open.

Ok open Terminal and do this again,

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.motion.plist

hit return

then:

Quit Motion if it's open.
Open the Applications folder.
Drag the Motion application to the Trash.
Go to /Library/Receipts.
In the Receipts folder, drag any receipts with names begin with "Motion" to the Trash.
Reinstall Motion from your installation disc set.
When finished, use Software Update (choose Apple > Software Update) to update your software to the latest version.

There are no receipts with names begin with 'Motion' in that folder. Do I still need to continue? I have reinstalled Motion before, with no result.

I want you to check some things that may or may not be affecting the situation. I am required to post any procedure as an Answer even if it is just a diagnostic test, so please ignore the Rate to Finish box and Reply to Expert after you have tried that.

Restart the computer while holding the Command and R keys to boot to Recovery HD partition, when it boots select the Disk Utility and Continue. Then select Macintosh HD on the left and first Verify Disk on the right and if that is OK Repair Permissions. If Verify Disk is not OK try to Repair Disk.

If that is all ok and does not need repair then I suggest you quit Disk Utility and Reinstall Mac OS X.

Sorry, I forgot about this software.... use it to completely remove FCS either before or after installing new system, then reinstall FCS and update as necessary;

OK, so if I understand you correctly I should first try to remove and reinstall FCS entirely by using the fcsremover software. If that doesn't work, I follow your previous advise.

Hi Mike, the problem is solved. I reinstalled the OS and now Motion is working again. The only thing is that my internet is very slow. Very much slower than on my MacBook Air, which is connected to the same network. Any idea? Thanks for your support so far.

Are they both using WiFi?

I'm running Lion (10.7.5) on my iMac and Mountain Lion (10.8.4) on my MacBook Air. I'm using Safari on both machines. I'v done the speedtest with the following result:


iMac Ping 14ms, download 5,08 Mb/s, upload 5,38 Mb/s


MAcBook Air Ping 41 ms, 9.70 Mb/s, upload 5.51 Mb/s

They are both very fast by most standards. Try Resetting Safari.

OK, seems to help a little bit. Still the difference in downloading between the two seems to remain more than 3Mb/s. Don't know if that's normal.


Anyway, only a minor problem compared to my Motion issue.
