Hi I have an Apple iMac in Cyprus .. i am currently travelling and just purchased a Mac air
is there any way i can access my iMac from this mac air while abroad and sync it
Hi and Welcome. My Name is XXXXX XXXXX I look forward to assisting you today with your question.

Yes, you can use Remote Desktop application to access to your iMac and get files from it. But YOU or someone you know need to have access to your iMac to do the first time setup on it.

The best Remote Desktop application out there is, LogMeIn --see here ---> https://logmein.com/

Another one is Team Viewer, see here : http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/mac.aspx

Team Viewer is free for non-commercial users. Remember, you need to install and setup the remote desktop application on both Macs inorder them to get connected.

For automatic syncing, you can try DropBox : https://www.dropbox.com/

If you have any questions or would like any additional information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank You.. Once the i mac is set set up must it remain or can it be shut down will i still be able to control and access it

Clem, It must be ON and connected to the internet. Then only you can control it realtime as well as upload/download files from it.

one more thing ... if my mac air is sleeping .. i cannot seem to access it from ipad or iPhone... how can i fix this

When your Mac sleep, it will disconnect from internet. That is why your iPad or iPhone can't access it. You have to prevent your Mac from sleeping. But you can put your display to sleep. Goto System Preferences > Energy Saver. Set Computer Sleep to Never and put Display Sleep to anything you like.
