Hi and Welcome. My Name is Ashik and I look forward to assisting you today with your question.

What is the format or the extension of those video files ?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

It's burned onto a dvd. it's a .Avi

Expert:  Ashik replied 4 years ago.
Rebecca, Codec simply means Compressor and Decompressor. Normally your Quicktime can only play limited number of compressed/decompressed formats. Those avi format must be in some other compresssed/decompressed format that your Quicktime can't play. So to play those kind of files you have to install additional codecs to your Mac. Download and install the codecs from here : http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian

Then try to play the videos files in Quicktime Player. If that didn't work, then download and install this application, VLC Player : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Then open those files in VLC Player and see if it works or not. Let me know if that didn't work, so we can continue troubleshooting.

Rebecca, it is not burned as DVD Video. If it is, then the files should have the extension of .VOB

Get Perian from here : http://perian.org/

it says no suitable decoder module- vlc does not support the audio or video format "gmp4"

Rebecca, those videos are encoded in Geo-MPEG 4 format. I will try to find the correct codec for your Mac. Please give me a moment
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

ok thank you

Expert:  Ashik replied 4 years ago.
Hi Rebecca, I'm really sorry for the bad news. GEOX or Geo-MPEG 4 are proprietary codec for the Geovision security systems. Those security systems are for the Windows machines and that codec is released ONLY for Windows. I've searched many places and couldn't find a single one for Mac. If you have access to a Windows machine, then you can download this codec to it and play the videos on Windows : http://www.xtechcam.com/downloads/geovision_codec_installer/GeoCodec.zip

or this one : http://www.xtechcam.com/downloads/geovision_codec/install-codec.zip

Unfortunately, they didn't release the Codec for Mac. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best Regards,
Ashik
