When I turned on my macbook it had a grey screen. I have managed to open safari but that is all. Behind that there is still the grey screen and no dock.
Please go to the Apple logo on the upper left of the screen, go to About This Mac (DO NOT Select More Info), and tell me the Version (under Mac OS X), the Processor and the Memory, it is all right there.

So Verify Disk was OK in green type and then you Repaired Permissions?

If so go to the Apple Logo to Software update and install what it says.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

I clicked repair disk, not verify and it listed lots of things in black type and one line of green that said it was okay.

Should I do this again first and click verify disk instead?

No as long as it said OK in green.

Thanks. It says my hard disk does not have enough free space.

OK you will have to remove some files do you think you know what is taking up all the space?

I think I need to empty some things I deleted from Trash but not sure I can open Finder...any ideas?

I think it might be TV programmes taking up the room.

Just tried to open iTunes from the recently opened items tab on the apple dropdown and it says it cannot be opened - unknown error occurred (13014)

Try booting into Safe mode by holding the Shift key until you see the Apple Logo then try to empty the trash.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

I don't seem to be able to open in safe mode...

What happens?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

If I just press the shift key nothing...

If I press the shift key when rebooting it opens with the same grey screen as before with the same safari window open.

Hold the power button for about ten seconds then hit it again and hold the Shift key keep holding until you see the Apple Logo

It has started in safe mode...should I go in as myself, or guest user?

Yourself see if you can empty the trash. Then see how much free space is available.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

It is rebooting and installing the software update so fingers crossed. Thank you for your patience.

OK no problem let me know
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

All seems to be working perfectly....thank you.
