I have turned on my imac after 10 days of vacation and am now getting a gray screen with an apple and a spinning gear...then the gear freezes after 10 spins.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues turning on the mac...:(

Do you know what version of OSX is installed in your mac? like 10.6, 10.8 etc

Thank You

Thank you, Julie.

Let's try some troubleshooting here. We are using a step by step approach. So if one step does not resolve your issue, please reply and we can try the next.

Step 1: Restart in safe mode

1. Be sure your Mac is shut down. If not, turn it off by holding the power button for 10-15 sec until it turns off.
2. Now turn it on.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
5. If it enters the safe mode, restart the computer normally by clicking on the apple logo at the top left corner and then on “restart”.

Let me know whether it turns on fine now.
