This answer was rated:

I'm trying to download a software update on my mac book pro and a message keeps coming up that I need to close two applications before update can take place:
microsoft database daemon and
sync services agent.

I did a search for the application and found them but they dont' seem to be open? Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hi, and welcome to JustAnswer! My name is XXXXX XXXXX I am excited to get started with you.

Appleologist :

The daemon application that you need to close is running in the background and is not an application. To quit it, open activity monitor

Appleologist :

Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner and type in Activity monitor

Appleologist :

Let me know when it is open

Customer:

its open

Appleologist :

Make sure the drop down next to the search bar is set to " All Process" In the search box, type in microsoft

Appleologist :

does it come up?

Customer:

yes, did that

Appleologist :

Ok, select it and then choose quit process

Appleologist :

(the red stop sign)

Appleologist :

Do the same for sync services

Customer:

sync services didn't come up after I typed it in the search field

Appleologist :

what about just typing in sync or agent

Customer:

it worked

Appleologist :

After deleting it, try to run your updates

Customer:

ok

Appleologist :

To prevent it from happening again, we can also make sure it is not listed as a login item

Appleologist :

meaning every time you log in, it will automatically run in the background

Customer:

downloading software now, but waiting to install. how do we prevent it from happening again

Appleologist :

Click on the apple logo in the upper left corner and choose system preferences. Choose User/Accounts (depending on your operating system) Click on the lock in the lower left corner so you can make changes. Click on login items and delete items that are listed

Customer:

done. The only things listed were Monitor and our scanner

Appleologist :

Ok good so you should not have that issue again. Was there anything els I can assist you with today?

Customer:

Thank you!

Appleologist :

Anytime!
