Customer Question

I cannot get the imac to start up - just a grey screen. I think the hard drive is failing or has failed as it will not always mount. I can start up from the cd but the hard drive will not always mount. I was using a USB drive to start up - I had used carbon copy cloner to create a startup disk from a different imac, and was in the process of trying to copy the contents of my user folder to the usb drive to preserve what data I could, as the internal drive had mounted. It stopped copying files with a few left in a particular folder, and when I went to stop the copy, it said that the drive had not been properly shut down. Now I can't get the internal drive to mount and there's still lots of files to copy! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is David, and I will do whatever I possibly can to help answer your questions.

You can try Target Disk Mode, and transfer the folder to another Mac.

If that fails I would recommend Disk utility software such as Data Rescue 3 or Disk Warrior.

If the disk is not recognized, try resetting the SMC.

Depending on how much you are willing to pay for data recovery, you can contact specialists such as Drive Savers or OnTrack.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
