I am no longer able to connect to Gmail using my iPhone. When I try to open Gmail using either Safari or the Gmail app, the app/browser just closes without warning. I do not get any message that could tell me what the problem is. Do you know what could be causing this?

Please reset the iPhone. To reset it, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for 10 or more seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If you get the message "slide to power off" ignore it. Just wait until the Apple logo appears.

I have now reset the phone, but I still experience the same problem.

It is original. I'm not sure what you mean by hacked/jailbroken, but it is definitely original, and not manipulated in any way.


After the reset, do you get the same issue from the Mail app and from the Safari app?

Yes, still same issue on both.


OK, if you check your Gmail account from your computer, does it work fine?

Also, are you checking it using the Mail app? Or the Gmail app? (from your iPhone)

Yes, it works fine on all other devices.


 


Gmail app. And Safari. Same problem with both.


OK, but do not use the Gmail app, try using the default Mail app. Does it work?

Also, is the iPhone updated to the latest OS version?

Ha, I didn't think to try the Mail app. It works! How do I know if I have the latest OS version? Probably I don't. How do I update it?


That's great! Please go to Settings, then General, then About, then let me know what you see next to "Version".

Also, which iPhone model do you have? iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S?

I have an iPhone 4.


OK. In order to update it to the newest version (5.1.1) you will need to connect it to your computer, open iTunes and update it from there.

HOWEVER, you should do a backup before. If you do not backup it, you may lose your information.

If you are happy now using the Mail application, you can leave it like it is now.
