iteachmac : Welcome ,I will give a full and clear answer to your question, please make sure to reply to any questions I have. They may be essential to my reply.
iteachmac : Hi ,
iteachmac : Can you get booted to the lion install DVD fully? Or does this fail?
iteachmac : Remove all external devices during , it cAn help.
iteachmac : Please also try. Power down . Remove battery and mains , hold power button for 5 seconds . Refit bat and mains , power on .
iteachmac : When did the problem start?
iteachmac : Thanks.
JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

THE PROBLEM STARTED ONE WEEK AGO. I'VE HAD THE COMPUTER ONE YEAR -- WORKING OK AS I EXPLAINED BEFORE, I CANNOT BOOT INTO ANYTHING WITH THE INSTALL DVD. I'D LIKE TO USE THE UTILITY PROGRAM, AT LEAST. I DON'T KNOW IF ANYTHING IS LEFT ON THE MAC HD I SHALL TRY WHAT YOU SUGGEST ABOVE. SORRY, BUT I'M HANDICAPPED AND SLOW

iteachmac : HI
iteachmac : No problem understood .
iteachmac : Does it boot and then crash ? Or nothing at all ,
iteachmac : Please try the reset outline above .
JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS TO HELP SOLVE THIS THORNY PROBLEM SO FAR, iteachmac. I DETACHED ALL EXTERNAL DEVICES, POWERED OFF, TURNED THE LAPTOP OVER TO TAKE OUT THE BATTERY; FOUND NO WAY TO DO SO; RESEARCHED APPLE SUPPORT; FOUND OUT THAT ALL 13" MAC BK. PROS SINCE 2009 HAVE BUILT-IN BATTERIES, CHANGEABLE ONLY BY APPLE TECHNICIANS. WITH NOTHING ATTACHED EXCEPT THE POWER CORD, I TRIED BOOTING AGAIN TO THE INSTALL DVD. THE WHITE SCREEN CAME UP, THEN THE APPLE LOGO AND TURNING WHEEL (AS BEFORE). THE SCREEN TURNED BLACK, AS BEFORE, AND THE DVD CONTINUED TO TURN. BUT THIS TIME, NO MESSAGE APPEARED AS BEFORE: "ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM." I WAITED A LONG TIME. EVENTUALLY THE DVD STOPPED TURNING; THE COMPUTER SEEMED TO HAVE TURNED OFF. NO IMAGE OF THE INSTALL DVD EVER APPEARED -- SAME AS BEFORE. VERY FRUSTRATING! I LIKE A COMPUTER TO "HUM," RUNNING FLAWLESSLY. SO FAR OUR PROGRESS IS NIL.

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

WHERE ARE YOU, iteachmac? IT HAS BEEN EIGHT HOURS SINCE YOU CONTRIBUTED. NOW IT'S CLOSETO MY BED TIME. I CAN'T STAY UP ALL NIGHT WAITING FOR YOU. I HAVE THE FLU; FEEL ROTTEN

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

My expert posted a suggestion at 1122 hrs. yesterday, the 28th. I tried what he suggested, and it did NOT WORK. I posted a long reply, answering iteachmac's questions at 1416 hrs. yesterday. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THE EXPERT'S RESPONSE FOR ALMOST 23 HOURS; THAT'S TOO LONG. If iteachmac is otherwise occupied, he should turn it over to another expert. It appears that my question may be beyond the capability of your expert. If so, please tell me and refund my deposit. Thanks.

iteachmac :

Hi , just trying to read your replies .

iteachmac :

CAPS on its difficult .

iteachmac :

Im personally in the UK , so there may be a time difference between us .

iteachmac :

Hope the Flu is some better .

iteachmac :

Yes some models do have built in batteries .

iteachmac :

I do need a full Mac id , and info to get closer to the points .

iteachmac :

So we have a 13ich MBP .

iteachmac :

Ok , I will find the resets for 13inch MBP , Are you sure your install DVD is very clean . look at it to the light to help determine .

iteachmac :

What OS do you have install to confirm ?

iteachmac :

** Note: 13inch reset :

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro
(Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Cond .
4 Boot from the DVD OSX installer holding the C key on power up .

iteachmac :

The method differs from other MacBook pros .

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

My 13" MBP has a 500 GB HD. I had Mac OS X - Lion on one partition, formatted for Mac. I used Bootcamp to create another partition for Windows. I formatted the second part'n. as NTFS; installed Win XP Prof with Svc Pack 2; then the Apple drivers for Win. I've been using the laptop that way, with both OS's working smoothly, for over a year. Now I'll leave my 10-yr-old Dell Dimension 8200 to do on my Mac what you suggested above. In 1966-'67, following a year in Vietnam as a Special Forces Med Officer, I studied tropical med. at U. of London.

iteachmac :

Hi ,

iteachmac :

Did you try the SMC reset for 13inch MBP ? last post .

iteachmac :

It is possible the computer has developed a hardware fault . In there situations its difficult to test or determine the problem .

iteachmac :

As the mac seems not to respond , it could be one of two things .

iteachmac :

The mac hardware is bad in some way , or the installation has errors or disk failure such as bad blocks .

iteachmac :

One way to test , fit the mac hd in another similar mac and try to boot via usb , or set startup to the now usb drive to test .

iteachmac :

this proves the hardware is at fault if it does boot on a other mac hardware.

iteachmac :

also it may be possible to check the NTFS and Mac formatted partitions from PC hardware , with Mac OSX drivers installed .

iteachmac :

If the drive as faulty , a disk check would find it .

iteachmac :

if the drive is..

iteachmac :

if a boot sector is damaged , it may cause the issue , but as you cant boot to DVD , without problems there may be an hardware issue .

iteachmac :

You make sure of boot to DVD should work , remove the internal MacHD and place in a USB SATA case .

iteachmac :

You can still boot and use the USB mounted Mac HD . To test .

iteachmac :

Also removing the drive should auto boot the Mac Install OSX DVD .

iteachmac :

No other disks will call boot first or crash the Mac .

iteachmac :

If the Mac is still , dead , or crashing ,. then PRAM , and SMC resets are the only way to try to fix .

iteachmac :

If you cant boot to DVD , or USB install , see Mac store , ask for genius , ask for a Mac Lion or snow leopard USB install to test startup . Or use there recovery system in shop to test hardware .

iteachmac :

You mac , may be under warranty so best find out , which problem is the effect.

iteachmac :

If the issue is not hardware. and proves to be the install . The HDD hardware may be faulty .

iteachmac :

With the HDD mounted in a USB case ,

iteachmac :

Does the drive show in hardware on Mac Disk utilities . we need a booted working mac to test or the Mac OSX install DVD booted to test and repair .

iteachmac :

Placing the Mac HD in a USB we can also look on the PC , using Mac OSX drivers , NTFS should be able to read from the PC without upgrades . .

iteachmac :

With Macdriver , drivers, on a PC you should be able to read the data .

iteachmac :

Note , : if the Mac HD is ok , and its a motherboard issue , trying to fix Mac HD etc , by guessing or making drastic decisions may harm an otherwise good install . The worse thing to do is to try to repair an install on faulty hardware , more problems can be created on top.

iteachmac :

Does you may have upgraded ram ?

iteachmac :

We can try booting to command line .

iteachmac :

Pram reset .

iteachmac :

Shut down the computer.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.

iteachmac :

You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously on power on.

iteachmac :

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys.

iteachmac :

You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

iteachmac :

You must use the build in keyboard or a usb keyboard for imacs and Mac pros or if a laptop keyboard is not working correctly etc.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

iteachmac :

Also try the SMc reset , outline well above for 13inch MBP . .

iteachmac :

Best to try this both now , and then after the Mac HD is removed .

iteachmac :

We can try booting to command line .

iteachmac :

details to follow .

iteachmac :

Please try the below :

Restart or startup the Mac as normal , but as soon as you hear the Startup chime hold the Command S keys.
You must use a USB or built in keyboard . A wireless keyboard won't work .

You'll get a Unix command line after a short wait . When the prompt comes up type:

fsck -f and hit the Return / Enter key.

When the diagnostics say the computer seems to be ok or other error displays? Do the same again:

fsck -f and hit the Return / Enter key.

Once done , make a note of the screen info .

Then type :

reboot

Then hit the Return / Enter key and you'll start up back as normal , please go on to see if the problem is resolved ..
This may have fixed one problem but other problems may need to be fixed also .

Does this help ?

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

G'day iteachmac, Here in the mountains of Colorado we're on MST which is 7hrs. behind GMT. HOORAY! Following your expert advice (modified somewhat) in post of 2012-01-29, 1339 hrs., my problem is more than half solved! I have Mac OS X, but not Win XP Prof. I made sure the Mac Installl DVD was clean; connected power; pushed Shift-Control-Option-Power together; released simultaneously. With Install Disc in optical drive, held "C" down, pushed Power. A white screen came up, with Apple logo and turning dotted wheel. The screen turned black, with no messages; disc stopped turning; computer powered off. Holding "Option" down, I pushed "Power." Three icons appeared in white screen: Mac, Win, and Install Disc. I clicked "Install Disc." The white screen with Apple logo and turning wheel appeared, followed by ... Voila! -- not a black screen, but a blue! -- from which emerged the long-awaited menu of the Install Disc. I clicked to repair my ext. HD containing all my Time Machine back-up images; waited many minutes; message: "Cannot Repair." I decided to try "RESTORE" anyway. It took 40 min. PRESTO! I had MAC back! It boots up fine, with all the Applications which also work. But ... clicking on the Win icon brings up a black screen, with the fateful message, Error Loading Operating System. I know the Bootcamp partition has not been wiped out; I can see it in Mac OS X; open it; see all the contents. I can open Disc Utility in Mac, of course. With that I can repair the Bootcamp partition and the Mac partition -- also the external HD where I have TimeMachine backups. I'll go to do that now. I might have to erase the entire 500 GB Mac HD, format as one Mac HD with no partitioning, restore a Mac image; use Bootcamp utility to create a partition for Win; reinstall Win.

JACUSTOMER-0e5yp4v1- :

I have no idea what PRAM and SMC resets are. Please do not assume that I'm familiar with the lingo. You might send me, by e-mail, printouts of these resets. There's a lot the maker does not tell you when you buy a computer. Can you recommend a good handbook? It's out of the question for me to remove and re-connect the internal HD. I told you I am handicapped. It would be an all-day project, and I have no directions. Do you think I should know intuitively? I tried clicking the "Accept" button; got a message: This chat session will end; so I cancelled. I'm not finished with you helping me solve a disturbing problem. I was happy with having both Mac OS X and Win XP Prof on one laptop. It was a catastrophe to lose both; I have regained one; why not the other. I can read, copy, paste, and synchronize files between the two systems - WITHOUT virtual hard drives.

What Customers are Saying:

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
