I have a Western Digital 550 GB portable hard drive, just out

Customer Question

I have a Western Digital 550 GB portable hard drive, just out of the box. I'm using it with a Mac Mini (also brand new). I have its dialog box on the screen, but it's empty. There's no left-side bar (with contents). I'm unable to transfer any content to it.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.

You will need to format the Western Digital portable hard drive using Mac OS Extended (HFS+).

If you go to the partition map and click the “Options…” button, you’ll be able to select which scheme to use for the boot records. If the boot record scheme is set to “Master Boot Record”, you will not be able to format it as Mac OS Extended. Changing it to GUID or Apple Partition Map will work. Once you get that set, it will be clear what to do.
