Resolved Question:

Plugged into my laptop. my iPhone screen shows a picture of a USB cable and an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo. A message pops up on the laptop screen saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, and I must reset it to the original settings, wiping out whatever I have on it.

Unplugged from the laptop the iPhone screen remains frozen in that configuration.

Is there any way around resetting the whole thing?

I am Vinod. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.

If it is showing a usb cable and an itunes logo, then you need to restore the phone. There is no other way around, unfortunately..:(

But after restoring is complete, you have two options, "restore from backup" and "set up as a new phone".

If you select "restore from backup", the old settings will sync back to the phone, so in most cases you don't lose any data.

Hope this info helps. Let me know if you have any difficulty.

Thank You
