what program can I use to make a gif have a transparent background?
Hello, my name is Dan.
I will do my best to help you, the only stupid question is the unasked one.
I use PhotoShop Elements or PixelMator.
Both require reading the manuals.
I like PiexlMator for the price, usability and interface. Easier to use than PhotoShop.

I got the software. I changed the background to transparent with the magic erasor but now it's a .pxm file and I can't use it nor can I find a converter. so it doesn't work for me. now what?
You can save the file in many different formats.
Use save as.
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
It would not allow me save in any other format. I know how to use save as and tried that, of course
Ok, then this will do it, use Preview, it will convert it and it is already in your Applications.
Looks like this.
I use it all the time to build things.
I do not have PixelMator on this machine as I am away from my base.
Preview in 10.5.8 will do this job as well as Preview in 10.6.6.

When I opened Preview and tried to open the pxm file, it did not light up and become available to open. Only the jpg and gif did. I tried to attach it here and it won't take that kind of file either.
I would try again with PixelMator, something went wrong.
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
Tried it. Didn't work any differently. Oh well.
Try saving from Preview as jpeg before using PixelMator.
