I cant get past the white screen of death on my 24 inch iMac.

This answer was rated:

I can't get past the white screen of death on my 24 inch iMac. Resetting the pram, holding d or c, option, or trying migration assistant does nothing for me. I have no peripherals attached other than a keyboard and there's nothing in the optical drive. I have no clue what to do... thanks in advance

The Mac Daddy :

Hi

The Mac Daddy :

Welcome to JustAnswer.com, I would be happy to help!

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

thanks a lot

The Mac Daddy :

Are you in front of the computer at the moment?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yes

The Mac Daddy :

Ok...

The Mac Daddy :

As you power it on, I want you told down the Command and S buttons together...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ok

The Mac Daddy :

You should see a lot of text appear on the screen

The Mac Daddy :

Whatever it stops on, I would like you to read that to me...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

i get nothing but a white screen, no text

The Mac Daddy :

Ok... Try the same thing, Command and V key instead...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ok, one sec

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

same, absolutely nothing

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

just a white screen

The Mac Daddy :

You need to hold the keys down for around 10 -20 seconds

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

oh ok

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

i'll try that

The Mac Daddy :

Both together

The Mac Daddy :

You can let go when you see some text

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

would you like for me to try the command + s again?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

or command v

The Mac Daddy :

No thanks, XXXXX XXXXX is fine

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

k

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

nothing!

The Mac Daddy :

Hmmmm that is very strange...

The Mac Daddy :

Does the computer make any sort of beeping noises at all?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yeah, i thought so

The Mac Daddy :

Does it make the chime noise that it would usually make when you turn it on?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

it makes the usual make sound when it boots

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yes, that chime noise

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

oops "mac" sound when it boots

The Mac Daddy :

have you got another keyboard we can try on the Mac? Was that one working ok last time you checked?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

I left for a few hours earlier and when i returned my computer was completely off

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

the command option p-r works

The Mac Daddy :

It re-chimes?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yes

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

but still shows the white screen

The Mac Daddy :

Ok, so your keyboard is working...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

when i hold down option, i get the cursor but no options for hdds

The Mac Daddy :

My suspicion is you have a failed hard drive

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ouch

The Mac Daddy :

But I just wanted Verbose Mode (Command V) to verify that for me

The Mac Daddy :

Generally when you get stuck on the white screen, it's a failed hard drive...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yeah, that did nothing

The Mac Daddy :

Unless you have just installed an Update of some sort, then it may be a software corruption

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

I bet that's a hard task with this imac

The Mac Daddy :

Which iMac do you have?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

24" aluminum

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

2.4 ghz c2d

The Mac Daddy :

2 years old?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yep

The Mac Daddy :

Yeah... Those are near impossible to repair yourself

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

geeze

The Mac Daddy :

You have to remove the glass panel, and remove most of the insides, before you get to the hard drive

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

nice

The Mac Daddy :

And then get the glass on, without leaving any fingerprints or dust particles behind on the underside,

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

haha.... yeah, i don't see that happening

The Mac Daddy :

It shouldn't be too expensive to have replaced at an Apple Store

The Mac Daddy :

Around $200 max I would say

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

is it possible to opt for a ssd drive?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

even if this one is sata

The Mac Daddy :

Not at the Apple store...

The Mac Daddy :

But at the moment, it probably wouldn't be worth it for an SSD

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yeah, very expensive

The Mac Daddy :

They make more sense in a portable machine

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

right

The Mac Daddy :

Can you try Command V one more time...

The Mac Daddy :

Just hold it down for almost aminute

The Mac Daddy :

a minute

The Mac Daddy :

No...

The Mac Daddy :

If the hard drive has mechanically failed, Migration Assistant wont do anything

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

so, i can't retrieve my data?

The Mac Daddy :

NOTHING is impossible

The Mac Daddy :

But it can be VERY expensive

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

well, i do have time machine

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

so that's good

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

i'll try command v now

The Mac Daddy :

Ok... So if you have backed up, you are good to go, once they install a new drive

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yep

The Mac Daddy :

Sorry to ask you to try again, but its very unusual for that NOT to work...

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

its no problem.... ill do anything at this point

The Mac Daddy :

Anything?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

nope

The Mac Daddy :

Can you see the Apple logo?

The Mac Daddy :

Does that come up?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

no

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

it never makes it to the logo

The Mac Daddy :

Does your computer usually boot in to your desktop, or do you need to enter a password?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

no password

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

well

The Mac Daddy :

A login password

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

now that you ask that

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

shoot, i can't remember

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

lol

The Mac Daddy :

Is the computer on at the moment?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yes

The Mac Daddy :

If it is, please turn it off and turn it on again and let it sit there for a minute

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ok

The Mac Daddy :

No Command V or Command anything

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ok

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

thanks for trying to help me

The Mac Daddy :

No problem

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

I was about read to drop kick this thing

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

ready*

The Mac Daddy :

That sometimes helps ;)

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

haha

The Mac Daddy :

Ok... Would you say the computer has been on for a minute now?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

yep

The Mac Daddy :

Can you press volume buttons on your keyboard up/down and tell me if you hear anything?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

i don't hear anything

The Mac Daddy :

You have pressed the Volume up button a number of times yeah? And you don't have the computer connected to any speakers?

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

that's correct

The Mac Daddy :

Ok...

The Mac Daddy :

Well it was a long shot

The Mac Daddy :

I thought it might be that your SCREEN was the problem

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

haha, thank god it's not

The Mac Daddy :

That's what was all white... If you can hear the volume buttons up/down then it means your computer was working, but we just couldnt see it!

The Mac Daddy :

But it looks like its a plain old Hard Drive failure

The Mac Daddy :

You can book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store from this weblink: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

that sucks... glad it happened after the semester ended

JACUSTOMER-8y4r3nj9- :

thanks a lot, man

The Mac Daddy :

No probs

The Mac Daddy :

Merry Xmas
