Safari no longer launches after I accepted an update yesterday. I have downloaded it completely again and still no response.

No - The menu bar appears at the top of the screen, but doesn't launch to the yahoo home page like it did before yesterday. When you try to close the computer you have to force quit safari although it never reponsed.

We can try to delete Safari's Preferences. May be it'll fix the problem..

Close Safari and goto Macintosh HD/Users/[your user name]/Library/Preferences folder and move the file "com.apple.safari.plist" into desktop.

(Macintosh HD is your hard disk...)

Now open Safari..Does that worked ?

There is no file named com.apple.safari.plist in the location you describe

Okay..we can uninstall Safari with a special application called CleanApp. Then download and install Safari 5 again.

Download CleanApp : http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/

(You can a see tutorial video in their website, and no need to buy this application, Just use the trial to uninstall Safari)

Once you uninstalled Safari, download and install Safari from here : http://www.apple.com/safari/

Restart your Mac and try Safari again. Let me know if that works or not..

I ran the cleanapp, did the uninstall on safari, did a download on safari, restarted the Mac. Safari still doesn't run.

There are some known issues with Safari 5 and Leopard, so uninstall Safari 5 again with cleanapp and install old Safari 4.0.5 : http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Safari4/061-7781.20100311.Sfr45/Safari4.0.5Leopard.dmg

You have to wait until Apple updates and fixes bugs with Safari 5.

Even though I have uninstalled Safari 5, downloaded the older, when I go to install the older the computer gives the message that I can't install the older version because the newer version is installed. I can find no evidence that the safari 5 is on the hard drive.

Just as i suspected..Once you installed Safari 5, its hard to downgrade and mainly it won't allow to downgrade. You can Force install Safari 4. Download and install Pacifist from here : http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg (Just use the trial version). In Pacifist, load the Safari 4 package you downloaded earlier, and Pacifist will load Safari. In Pacifist, click the Install button. If Pacifist asks the'Applications already exists, need to replace ?' choose Yes and continue. Let me know how it goes..
