Try resetting the PRAM. This can fix some odd power issue, reboot the machine and hold down the following key, command option p r keep holding these keys till you hear the start up chime twice.

Did that already. Zapping the pram!

How old is the machine? Have you tried using coconut battery to look at it?

Yes, I tried coconut battery.  It's 2007 13 inch macbook, and the battery has been replaced once already. The battery seemed OK before the power cord went bad and needed replacing.

At this point I would say the best bet would be to take it back to the apple store and have them replace the battery again.
