Which version of iPhone? 3G? 3GS? Which firmware are you on? You can ascertain this information by going to Settings->General->About and scroll down to Version.

When you attempt to connect to a wireless signal, what are you seeing on your iPhone? Typically, if you go to Settings->Wi-Fi, ensure Wi-Fi is set to On and you should be able to see a list of wireless networks. One reason why you may not be able to see it is if you've chosen to not broadcast your SSID from the wireless router's settings.

Please let me know if this helped or whether I can be of further assistance.
