I am trying to resusitate by MacBook (M6497) because I need

Customer Question

I am trying to resusitate by MacBook (M6497) because I need to run OX 9. I get a 'broken' folder icon.

1) does this indicate a failed hard drive? Where can I get a replacement hard drive. Is it hard to install?

2 What OS do I need to return to to get Classic? My desktop computer runs OSX10.5.8.

3. Is it possible to use my desktop to start up the laptop?

Are you getting the broken folder when trying to boot from OS 9? Or does it do this anyway?

To use Classic, you need 10.4.11 or lower. Classic needs to have OS 9.2.x.

No, you cannot use another Mac to start up from..

You will need to either re-install the Restore disks for that Mac so you get OS 9 and OS X or you will need a OS 9 Installer.

Because the ibook has not been used for a few years, I don't remember what system was on it but since I was using it as my only computer for quite a while, I assume it is OSX. I have never had to reinstall but being a long time Mac user I have quite a collection of system disks. I really hope to have a system that allows both. I will check my supply and stop trying to figure out how to do it from my iMac

Yes, find the Restore installer disks and use them.

The iBook should have come with OS 9 and X I think and it will be re-installed by the Restore.

If not, any OS 9 installer will work as long as it is 9.2 or higher.

What does the broken folder icon mean?
Expert:  Mike replied 7 years ago.

literally a broken system is installed and needs repair.

Try this. Turn on the Mac and hold down the Option key on the keyboard.

When you see a screen with arrows on it, let the key up.

Is there more than one icon for the Mac to boot from?
