What is the format/suffix of the movie files ?

i down loaded the camera movies from my last computer on to an exsternal hard drive then loaded them in to a document which is now on my desk top screen
i am pretty hopeless at this so please be patient

No Problem..I just want to know the format of the video files.

So, just select any one video file, press Command(Apple) + I, this should bring the Get Info window. You can see its format/extension in the "Get Info" window and it should be like this, movie.mpg, movie.avi, etc

Okay...that MPEG-4 AVC codec file. I think iMovie can recognize it. Open iMovie, click File menu and select "Import Movie". Select the movies that you want to import and click OK/import. This should download your video files into iMovie.

(You can select multiple video files by Pressing Command(Apple) key while importing)
