Hi I am Ashik. I think i can help you
Does it mounts on your desktop when you connect it on your Mac ?

"Tried to remove it by going to Disk Utility but it's not listed there"...not listed where ? On the left column ?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
No, it does not mount on the disktop.

When did this problem started ?

Are you able to use this hard drive on another Mac ?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
It started about two months after I bought the LaCie.
I don't hae another Mac.

Ok...Just two more questions...

Are you sure that the hard drive is not damaged ?

How old is it ?
Expert:  Ashik replied 8 years ago.
Okay...just two suggestions :

First, if the drive is not appearing on the desktop, you may need to format :
  • Goto ~/Applications/Utilities and open DiskUtility
  • Now connect your hard drive into your Mac
  • Select the external Hard Disk at the left column.
  • Click on the Erase tab
  • At the “Volume Format” select “Mac OS Journaled/Extended”
  • If you confirm to format your hard disk, Click on “Erase” button.
  • If the erase process finished, your external hard disk is ready to use for Mac

If that didn't worked then reset the PRAM and NVRAM and then format it..

Reset PRAM and NVRAM
  1. Shut down your iMac
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears and before the chime sound.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for three times.
  6. Release the keys.

If both my suggestion doesn't worked, your drive is defective...All the datas in it were gone.
