What specific iPod is this?

What do you mean dead? No power? Turns on, but nothing works?

Let me know.

Did you get anything on the screen at all? Light on in background but no text/display?

Have you tried to reset it?

Customer: replied 8 years ago.

No nothing on screen at all - just dead/blank

Tried to reset it on I-tunes but crashed

By iTunes you mean the Apple software? And it crashes it?

That is not good.

Do you have a magnifying glass by any chance? If so, or if your eyes are still good, unlike mine, look carefully at the pins where the dock connector is. Do any look lifted up or damaged?

Do they look dirty or colored, like greenish?

Also, try this to reset the unit without iTunes.

Let me know, Because if these fail, it may need to visit the Apple store to be spanked for being bad.
