Can you see them on AOLs mail or are they gone from there also?
Did you just do an Apple update? And do have backup such as TimeMachine?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
They are also gone from aol mail. I haven't done an update recently. I do backup with time machine but unfortunately the recent ones that I really need are not backed up!

I feel your pain. I have had success with Data Rescue from Prosoft. As long as you don't save files or write to your hard drive, most if not all can be recovered, it is time consuming and the Data Rescue is about 100.00 to buy. But it really really works, I also suggest an external drive to save the recovered stuff to.
As to why this happened I can't say with certainty as there are many variables.
I can not offer much else without having the machine to work on. Sorry.
