My daughter gave me her Mac, and it is asking for a password, but, none that she gave me work. How do I get on and change it?

Passwords are case sensitive so make sure you use upper and lower case letters in the right places.
You can boot from the system CD that came with your computer and change the master password XXXXX the Utilities menu on that CD.
