When I try to open AIM I get the small box that asks for screen name & password. It then says connecting but nothing happens. Why?

This sounds like the port for AIM to connect through is blocked either by the Firewall in OS X or in the router you use to connect to the Internet.

Can you check the settings for me and post them back here?

Open AIM and go to Preferences from the AIM menu.

Also, from that same menu, choose About AIM and tell what version you have.

When I go to preferences I get a box that says I must be signed in to see IM
It is 1.0(4.6)
OK, so you cannot see the preferences and account setup without being signed in?

2 things you can try for me.

Download this version of AIM and see if it connects any better.

or, try iChat. It is also an AIM client. We can see if it connects for you with your username/password XXXXX verify they are good.

I can walk you through the iChat setup if you want.
