I have a Powermac G4, purchased in 2000. I am running Mac OS 10.3.9, thinking about buying new iMac. I have Adobe InDesign CS and Photoshop Elements 2.0 Will a new iMac run these programs? If not, can I get upgrades for these rather than buying new? If I buy new or upgraded programs, what kind of luck will I have in transferring old files to new computer?
Hi,

Yes, you could move these over using Migration Assistant when you setup the new Mac, but they will be running in Emulation mode, making them a little slower than they should be.

You most likely will not be able to upgrade as Adobe is now shipping CS4 and CS may be too far away to qualify as an upgrade.

As far as your files go, yes, they will transfer over just fine and if you keep your existing apps then they will open fine as well.

Keep in mind to make sure you grab or re-install all your fonts as well as graphic supports files, etc... or your files will open and not look right.

Any thing else?

Let me know,
Mike

You mention keeping “existing apps.” I have been told that my existing apps will not run on new computer with Intel chips. That’s what brought about all my questions. Will they or will they not work on new iMac with Intel chips?
They should work just not as fast. You can't bring any Classic apps, ones that only run in Mac OS 9 or Classic mode under OS X.

When I got my first Intel MacBook, I used Microsoft Office because it was able to run under PowerPC Emulation.

Here is a good Q&A from Adobe that talks about this. They do not mention CS, but do mention CS2. Since CS is running on your G5, you should have no issues with this except for speed.

As I specified in my original question, my Powermac is a G4, not a G5 as you mentioned in your last answer. Does that make a difference in your answer?
Sorry. No I still think you are fine. PowerPC chips in both.
