What camera are you trying to use? Is it a web cam or a still camera?

Do this:

Go to your Applications folder and open Image Capture.

Go to Image Capture menu and choose Preferences.

See if it is set to 'when camera connected open "None" in popup. Close the window.

If it says iPhoto or another application, then, while Image Capture is open, plug your Camera into a USB port on the computer, not into a hub.

See if the window now shows your camera when it is connected. Make sure to turn on your camera after you connect it to the Mac USB port.
