I looked around and it seems that scanning is NOT supported in OS X 10.5.2.

A discussion thread at Apple Support Discussions has a response from HP that one of the posters got.

I would read through that thread. It has some good information and they recommend Vuescan, which is a third party software package that supports scanning.

One poster tried it and it worked, even in eval mode.
