I have an ibookg4 with a 40 gig hard drive and I want to put a bigger hard drive in. How large can I go and what models should I purchase? Also I live in Los Angeles city what would be the best place to take the ibook to have the hard drive replaced?
You can go as large as 250 GB. Any 2.5" x 9.5mm drive will fit in the iBook G4 as long as it connects with an ATA connection.

The 250 GB can be purchased at iFixit for $139.95

A 160 GB is $89.95

An 80 GB is $79.95

It is a complicated installation, so I do not recommend to do it yourself, but here is the installation guide from iFixit:

A great service for you is, they will send you a box to send in your computer, transfer your current data to your new drive, and ship your computer back to you for these prices (includes hard drive, installation & shipping):

80 GB - $195
120 GB - $215
160 GB - $245
250 GB - $295
