Customer Question

I had an old Mac Performa 475 with external data storage Syquest and Zip drives. When this machine died recently I found myself unable to get my data off of these drives. I've gotten access to an iMac but it has only USB connectors.

I have no desire to own another outdated performa, is there a converter cable or box to plug the old drives into the iMac?

How can I save my artwork and page layouts?

Yes, you are in luck! You are able to purchase a USB to SCSI adaptor to connect your Syquest and Zip drives to your new iMac. I found one for you at PC Connection for $114.79. Here is the Link

Hope this helps you, and thanks for using Just Answer.

Thanks for the work but the iMac has OS 9.3 (upgradable to 9.4) while the spec. for the cable stipulates OS 10 or higher is required. I've located a data recovery service that can handle it for me.

My fault, I assumed you meant a new iMac with OS X. I can find you solutions, those data recovery services are usually very expensive.

I am pretty sure your iMac has a firewire port and I found this device for you it allows you to convert SCSI ports into Firewire, and it works with Mac OS 9.x and Mac OS X. You can purchase this one for $109.00 at RATOC Systems:

If your computer doesn't have firewire ports, here is a USB to SCSI adapter that works with Mac OS 8.5 or higher. It is a very cheap $27.99 at PacificGeek:

Lastly here is an adaptor that is branded to do exactly what you want. "USB to SCSI Adapter Cable HD50 for Syquest/Jaz/ext HDD" It can be purchased here for $38.98 and it works with Mac OS 8.5 or higher.

Hope this can save you a bit of money over those data recovery services.

As always, thanks for using Just Answer!
