Customer Question

My Macbook no longer starts up when I switch it on, instead I get a flashing folder with a question mark icon, how can this be fixed?, and will all my files and software be safe?

Try this:

Put your install CD/DVD into the computer.
Turn off your computer.
Turn on your computer and hold down the C key (to start from CD).
The installer should start up.
Click to get past the welcome screen.
You should see a menu, select "Disk Utility" from the menus.
Once Disk Utility is running, use it to repair your hard drive.

Let us know how it goes.

Assuming there is no serious damage to the file system, your files should be safe this way.
