Second opinion] I'm concerned about the requirements for accessibility that may apply to my organization. We are a 501c3 in San Francisco, CA. We are a membership based community chorus, so I think we provide a public accommodation. While we value inclusion, we also have standards for participation that may exclude some people. One of our members has stated that due to a mental medical condition, he is not able to memorize his music, and so he would like to use his sheet music folder during rehearsals and when he is on stage. We have done a lot to enable this member to participate, but we have not fully acceded to the request. Now the member has sent us a letter from a lawyer at a local organization that advocates for people with disabilities. The letter doesn't make a legal case, but does restate the request for the specific accommodation. We believe that memorizing music and performing without sheet music is a fundamental part of what we do, that informs the music we select, the process of learning and rehearsing the music, and the presentation of music to our audience. Is that a legal basis for refusing to provide an accommodation that a member states is necessary for his participation?JA: Have you discussed this with a manager or HR?
