Second opinion] Ex girlfriend on the house title, NYC,
I am reaching out to My husband bought a house 15 years ago for $350K. The down payment was $35K and he paid for it with his own money. At the time, he didn't know any English so he put his girlfriend on the house title. She worked in a morgage company and convinced him that they must put down both of their names on the house title. He believed she was being honest. While signing the title she took an American lawyer so that my husband wouldn't understand what exactly was happening. He had no idea that she signed up as a co-owner of the house yet only his name was provided as a person in charge of paying the mortgage. They broke up 5 years ago and now he's stuck with the mortgage. He takes good care of this house. He did sone remodeling. He continues paying off the mortgage and taxes. When they were still together she bought a next house but only in her name this time. He fixed and renovated everything for free. She didn't pay him for his work. They were together for almost 30 years but she never put down a single penny into the house. My husband still has a 300K mortgage in his name. They also took a small mortgage of 30K for both of their names and she told him that if he wants his house signed back into only his name he must return her 30K back and everything will be his. He returned her 30K. But until this day she did not keep up with her promise. He continues to pay for everything and she is still a co-owner. Now my question is: is there anything that can be done about this? What can we do? How much more do we have pay to her? And does she still have the right to a half of the house if she's not paying anything for it? We would very kindly appreciate you help!He pays for the house 350K Down payment 35K Taxes 15 years 100K Mortgage 15 years 270K House renovation 50K As of today the value of the house is 600K.… read more
