I have been contacted by legal one mediations about a payday loan they said i took out in 2012. They said I would be served and taken to court if I do not pay. I cannot find them online. I don't remember taking this loan out. Is this a legitimate company? How do I get them to stop contacting me. Would this show up on my credit report if it was an outstanding debt?

Lawyer's Assistant: What state is this in? And when did the issue begin?

Ohio, I got the first call yesterday.

Lawyer's Assistant: What steps have you taken so far?

I haven't paid anything, I am looking into it. but they are being pushy

Lawyer's Assistant: Anything else you want the lawyer to know before I connect you?

The debt may be legit, 2012 was a bad year for me, lots of debt , divorce, but I thought I had gotten caught up on everything and it does not show up on my credit report

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer. My name is ***** ***** I'm an attorney. Please note this site is general information for educational purposes only. No course of action is proposed and the information provided does not constitute legal advice. You might be offered a phone call, but you are under no obligation to accept; the phone call requests don’t come from me - they’re offered by the website - but if you do want a phone call I’d be happy to do that as well. I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.
.
I really can't tell you whether or not they're legitimate - but I can tell you that you're entitled to know what the debt is all about and they must send you a copy reflecting what the debt is IF YOU ASK. That's a requirement under the law. They also can't harass, threaten or intimate you or they'd be in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act which is a Federal Act that makes it so violators may have to pay damages to the people they go after if they do so improperly. So I'd say, find out what the debt allegedly is - and find out whether they have a legal right to collect on the debt. And then you can decide how you want to proceed. Please let me know if that answers your question - and please ask if you have any additional questions; I'd be happy to answer them. If you don't need any additional information, if you wouldn't mind could you please take a moment to submit a rating. It DOES NOT cost you anything extra and it allows me to get credit for helping you. Sometimes people aren't aware that experts don't get any credit for the time and effort that we spend on our answers unless you rate it positively - and we get instantaneous notification of customer ratings. 5 STARS is always appreciated! You can still ask follow up questions after rating - and of course please ask if you need clarification to anything I've written. There may be some lag in my response time if you follow up with additional questions. It just means I'm working with someone else but I will ALWAYS come back an answer your questions when I'm done.

thank you.

do they have to send me the info through the mail?

No. It doesn't have to be sent in any specific format BUT if you're concerned about whether it's a scam you ABSOLUTELY have the right to ask for it to be sent by mail - AND to ask for their contact information. Any reputable company will provide it. Scammers won't.

Ask Your Own Legal Question

Scammers will generally give you some story about why they can't provide it - or give you fake information.
