My parents signed an affidavit of support for my dads sister

This answer was rated:

My parents signed an affidavit of support for my dad's sister and her husband and daughter making them legal sponsors. They have been here for two years as legal residents. The husband was not feeling well and went to the hospital and they found a tumor in his intestine. They scheduled a date and he had surgery. They do not have health insurance and we are pretty sure they will not be able to afford and will not pay the bills. Will my parents be held responsible to pay these medical bills?
Hello and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you.

Unfortunately, it is possible that your parents will be held liable if the bills are not paid. The law states that a person who signs an affidavit of support is liable for unpaid bills for 10 years. Accordingly, if the affidavit of support was signed within the last 10 years, and your father's sister and her husband do not pay their bill, then your parents can be held liable in court.

I am truly sorry to give you this bad news, but please understand that it would be unfair to you (and unprofessional of me) to provide you with anything less than an honest response. However, if your concerns were not satisfactorily addressed, then please let me know, and I will be happy to clarify my answer. I do ask that you rate me based upon whether I answered your question, and not based upon whether the answer was good news or bad news. Your positive feedback is greatly appreciated.
