We went to a bank to get a home we were told we needed the full $6000 for the downpayment, the next day they let someone else put $1000 down to hold it, was that legal?

There is a difference between an escrow which holds the property for you and the down payment. The 1,000 is probably just the escrow amount and not the total of the downpayment. However, they can require different amounts based on your credit reports.

We were told we had to have it all we could not do a partial payment and we were approved to get the house when we got the full downpayment.
