can a lawyer do any legal work on a file after being disqualified

When you say "disqualified" I am assuming a court has made that determination. If so, and without seeing the exact wording of the order, answer is would be that he could NOT perform any work on the file. Again the order might be limited in nature and allow for some work to be done or, on the other hand, if it were based on a CONFLICT OF INTEREST issue, would probably have said, or be interpreted as, the attorney must have no further contact with the file or the client whatsoever.
