Customer Question
I have a 1...

I have a 1 day old calf (was a twin, now a pail calf). I gave him colostrum last night but he wont drink today. May have to tube him. In the meantime, can I give him draxxin?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with the calf?

He looks like he needs a "pick me up". Just thought I would give him a shot of penicillin or draxxin or banamine or something?

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the calf seem to hurt?

No pain, just a fresh BIG twin - very weak

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the calf's name?

Pendleton

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Pendleton?

No, he's just a day old and I live to take care of my babies. Sounds stupid but the way I am

My Mom and I live in the middle of the Badlands of ND. With the weather, there is no way to get to a vet so we need to use whatever we have to help our animals. I can't be around the computer for long - chores and bad weather coming. I will check back later. Thank you, ***** *****

Hello, this is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your concerns today.

I think I would avoid the Draxxin as there is no label dose for new born calves. I would be much more comfortable giving a little penicillin & Banamine & making sure he is warm & dry.

I agree that if he does not eat you will need to tube feed him ( get as much colostrum into him as you can over the next 24-48 ) hours, then a milk replacer with electrolytes, especially if he scours.

Hopefully, he will do well.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you.
