My neighbor brought home...

My neighbor brought home a 2 day old calf because the other refused to feed it and the owner did not have time to take care of. She brought it home Monday and this morning the eyes are cloudy. Can this be caused by dehydration?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Problems with drinking can be serious. I'm glad you noticed it. The Expert will know what to do. What is the calf's name?

No name yet....she is just trying to save the baby. It finally did drink a bottle just now by my friend I told her to get some colostrium at the feed store

Hello. This is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your concerns today.

While I am sure dehydration is factoring into things, a cloudy eye is almost always either pinkeye or anterior uveitis due to some other systemic disease. I would start antibiotics, like LA 200 & penicillin.

The ability of the calf to utilize colostrum is just about past. Maybe some would still be helpful at 72 hours, but the ability of the calf's gut to absorbed & utilize the antibodies in colostrum are pretty well past done in 24-36 hours. The calf just needs a good milk replacer from here on out.

Please let me know how else I may help.

Thank you.

My friend just gave it colostrum......is it going to hurt it in anyway?

No, not at all. You can certainly continue the colostrum for another 24 hours or so, but then switch to a good quality milk replacer to make sure the calf is getting the total nutrition it needs.

Thanks so much

You are welcome. Do not forget to consider starting the calf on some antibiotics.
