Customer Question
TC What OTC NSAID...

TC What OTC NSAID can I give a calf who ran into a panel and won't try to stand?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with the calf?

He ran into a wire panel. He went down and I thought he broke his neck.. He was stiff, but then he got up. Would lay down but got up to eat and drink for 2 days. Then he went down and hasn't really been up since, now for 3 days. He still will suck the bucket and has BM's and urinates. But he seems unwiling to try to stand. He rolls around from one side to the other, and will eat hay. But he wont' get up. I'm guessing he is sore. Thought that I might give him an analgesic but I have no vet close by for Banamine or such.

Veterinarian's Assistant: This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the calf?

NO, he's about 150+ pounds. Still nurses the bucket and was eating grain and hay/pasture. Jersey/angus cross.

Hello, this is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your question today. I am sorry you have had to wait for a response. I just came on & saw your concerns.

Aspirin is an excellent NSAID that is still available OTC. You can check to see if your local feed coop or Tractor Supply carries it. Otherwise, you can order some on line from a number of animal health sites. a 150 pd. calf would take about 7 grams of aspirin every 12 hours. I would try to get the 60 grain size of aspirin bolus, & give 1 & 1/2 twice daily for 5 days. Hopefully, this will help.

I hope this makes sense & you find the information helpful. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.
