Customer Question

I have a potbelly pig he has stopped eating but is drinking a little. Been feeding him with a surenge with boost. A week ago he got a antibiotic shot seemed to help a little. But has been recently diagnosed with kidney worms which the vet says should kill them. When should we expect him to start eating again.

Sorry was given panacur for the worms and the vet said it should kill the worms. He is also a pet and only goes outside for excersise and use the restroom.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but can you tell me:

What tests did his vet do?

What antibiotic was given?

Any fever, gagging, drooling or vomiting?

Are his gums pink or pale/white?

Any diarrhea or black stool?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.

Thank you,

Now we need to tread with care for your lad.

Its good that they did start treatment to remove the kidney worm, but if he has appetite loss we may have a situation where we have kidney damage from the parasite (with a secondary uremic gastritis causing appetite loss) but there is also risk that we have an opportunistic infection preying on his compromised immune system. Therefore, while I am glad urine was checked, we may actually need bloods tested as well to determine if we have an infection present and to ensure that kidney function isn't compromised. Based on that we may need a longer course of Amoxicillin (the long acting injections only last 48 hours, the regular ones half that time) +/- fluids or anti-nausea medication by injection.

Otherwise, we do need keep up on the syringe feeding but also try tempting him to eat (as I am sure you have). Favorites are allowed or you can even offer oatmeal, veggie or fruit baby food, or favourite fruits/veggies. Furthermore, since his drinking is poor and dehydration can make them feel weak and unwell, then do make sure to be supplementing that as well. Pedialyte, water flavoured with fruit juice or dilute Gatorade (diluted 50% with water) can be used and we need to make sure he is taking in at least 48 ml per kilogram of his body weight every 24 hours. Furthermore, if he seems nauseous at all, we can cover our bases with an OTC antacid (ie Zantac/Ranitidine at a dose of 2 mg per kilogram of his weight every 12 hours). And if we use those and again don't see him perking up, then we'd want him reassessed so those opportunistic infections (especially a concern if he perked up a bit with that injection) can be addressed and we can make sure his kidneys are working properly.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
