Customer Question

I have a 400 lb beef steer. It has it's head raised and mouth open. After observing it for a while, it ate a few bites of hay and walked off a short distance. Then as it stood there with head arched up and mouth open it started walking backwards a few steps. Stopped and then walked backwards again. Help, what is this.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner. If you would still like assistance, can you tell me:

How long has he been like this?

Are you sure he ate and wasn't sham eating?

Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count his breaths for 10 seconds + multiply by 6)?

If you can handle him safely, are his gums or conjunctiva pink or pale/white?

Any changes in the mouth or swelling in the throat area?
