No one around here sees potbelly pigs or will call me back

Customer Question

No one around here sees potbelly pigs or will call me back tonight. About two and a half hours ago our 3 month old pot belly pig got a dose of ivermectin equine paste wormer for about 800 pounds. She only weighs 31 pounds. The SPCA poison control recommended giving her peroxide to make her vomit but it didn't work. She still looks like she is doing okay. What else can I do?!

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian & I would like to help you with your wee one today.

If you have only tried the peroxide once, then you can try it again up to 2 more times. So, we'd want to do that now.

Otherwise, we'd need to get OTC activated charcoal from your local ER vet, farm supply, or pharmacy. We need the high strength version (grams not milligrams) and she needs to be give 1-4 grams per pound of her weight (so 31-124 grams) every 8 hours. This will work to bind the overdose and limit its effects. Finally, since this can be a neurotoxin in high doses, we'd want to get her seen as soon as we can (perhaps see if a farm vet can help since they tend to treat the species even if not as pets) as she may need IV fluids and symptomatic care to get her through this.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
